Background of the Study
Single parenthood, increasingly prevalent in contemporary societies, presents unique challenges that may affect the psychological well-being of children (Obi, 2023). In Ovia North-East, socio-economic hardships, reduced parental support, and societal stigmas have been linked to adverse mental health outcomes in children raised by single parents (Ibrahim, 2024). Research indicates that children in single-parent households may experience higher levels of anxiety, behavioral issues, and academic difficulties due to economic constraints and emotional stress (Adenuga, 2023). The dynamics of single parenthood in this locality are compounded by limited access to supportive community resources and pervasive cultural expectations (Omoniyi, 2025). This study explores the psychological effects on children within these households, examining factors such as family stability, social support, and educational attainment, while providing insights for policy makers to mitigate negative outcomes (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Children in single-parent families in Ovia North-East face significant psychological challenges due to economic hardship, reduced parental attention, and societal stigma (Uche, 2023). Limited empirical research on these impacts has hampered the development of effective interventions (Adebola, 2024). The lack of comprehensive studies addressing the emotional and behavioral consequences in these children necessitates an investigation that can inform targeted support measures and policy reforms (Eze, 2023).

Significance of the Study
This study is important as it illuminates the psychological challenges faced by children in single-parent families, providing essential data for educators, policymakers, and social workers. The insights will help in developing targeted interventions to promote resilience and improved mental health among vulnerable children (Balogun, 2024; Ogunyemi, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the psychological effects of single parenthood on children in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. It does not address single parenthood in other regions or related demographic factors.
